An Unusual Stingray (Kite Fish)

Whenever I happen to see a kite fish whether live or just in picture, I am reminded of the tragic death wild life expert Stephen Irwin met in the year 2006. Stephen Robert Irwin who was popularly known as ‘Crocodile Hunter’, suffered a fatal attack by the barbed tail of a stingray while filming for Television Documentary in Australian waters.

I saw this unusual species of Kite Fish (in the picture above) in Malpe Fishing Harbour during my recent visit to my hometown Udupi, India. Two fishermen brought this Kite Fish to auctioning yard by pulling it with a nylon rope tied. I could only take a quick picture with my cellphone. I have never seen such a kite fish with slit mouth like the shape of a twin hulled catamaran. This Kite Fish which must have weighed about 25 to 30Kgs was sold immediately.

Perhaps for our fisher men, this is not an unusually found species. Despite of my repeated search, I was unable to find pictures of similar Kite Fish on the net.
