The week ended with tragic news of bloody terror attacks on India’s financial capital Mumbai. The news overshadowed all other happening such as massive demonstrations in Thailand, the death of former PM V.P. Singh, OPEC meet and continuing impacts of Global Recession etc. etc.
I remember a similar situation happened years ago. When the entire world was mourning the death of Blessed Mother Theresa of Culcutta on Sept. 5, 1997, the news was soon overshadowed, partially though, by the tragic death of celebrity Lady Diana.
It is heartening to see all Indians and the world standing united keeping aside political and religious affiliations. We all sympathize with the families who have lost their beloved. A grave reminder – this could happen to anybody including me.
A chain of questions arise on every mind as how come this happen and is there no end?
Ø Is our intelligence inadequately equipped? (and then what is the use of boasting on our capability in remote sensing, the unique Brahmos & the Aakaash?
Ø Do we have more enemies inside than outside to provide support for such operations?
Ø Don’t we have contingency plans to tackle situations of this kind within minutes or hours? (it took 60 longs hours to contain the 10 odd numbers of extremists).
Ø How can a busy railway station like Victoria Terminus (present Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus) have no sufficient guards equipped with modern weapons?
Ø Was there nobody to retaliate when the two extremists roamed for more than 45 minutes on the platforms of V.T.?
Ø Is our advancement in military surveillance questionable?
Ø Is our coast guard inefficient?
Ø Can mere 10 militants sabotage and create havoc so massively?
Ø Haven’t we learnt lessons from the 2003 attacks on our Parliament?
Now that FBI is given to investigate the issue, the blame on neighboring Pakistan is on and the key politicians within the country finally waking up to submit their resignations!
What is the guarantee that similar attacks by hopeless militants would not happen in other metropolis like Delhi, Culcutta, Chennai or Bangalore? If the soul target of extremists were Westerners, Bangalore which houses thousands of them is surely in danger.
An interesting observation worth mentioning is the denial and disinterest shown by public on the immediate visit of opportunist politicians into the city. The message by public is clear “we don’t need you, we salute our brave commandos who have come for our rescue risking their lives, without any political ambitions”.
How long will we continue with our age old policies, age old military equipments and above all age old politicians?
Is there any answer?
